We all know how delicious and tasty junk food is, and enjoying the occasional treat now and then does wonders for the mind and soul. Whether your go-to junk food is a cheesy pizza, a greasy burger, deep fried donuts, a bowl of ice cream, or anything else for that matter, the thing to remember is that moderation is key here. Consume too much junk food and not only will you gain body fat, your health will also suffer hugely, and you may even place your life in danger. Stroke, cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, and even some forms of cancer have all been heavily attributed to junk food and unhealthy lifestyle choices, but is junk food really as bad as we’re led to believe? Why not make your own mind up, as we look at four of the unhealthiest junk foods ever created.


Pizza – Yes, we know that pizza tastes better than life itself, and as the very occasional treat, pizza is a wonderfully rich and greasy food to enjoy. If your diet consists of too much pizza however, it’s time to address this sooner rather than later. In reality, other than the tomatoes in the sauce, there’s virtually no nutrition to be obtained from pizza. The base is made from refined white flour, enriched with sugar and oil. The sauce is also often packed full of sugar and salt, and then there’s the cheese. Cheese may indeed be a good source of protein and calcium, but the health benefits stop there. Cheese is also packed full of calories, fats, and oils. Combine all of this together and you have the ultimate high-calorie food that promotes obesity like never before.


French fries – Anything deep fried is generally not considered healthy, but French fries are in a whole other league completely when it comes to unhealthy properties. French fries are made from potatoes that have been thinly sliced. So far, so good, right? Well, these thin sticks are then deep fried in fat. As they are sliced so thinly, they have an increased surface area, which means that they absorb more of the oil. After coming out of the fryer they are then salted to within an inch of their lives. Too much salt has been linked with cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure, and when you combine this with the excessively high amounts of oil that the fries have absorbed, it’s easy to see why they’re considered to be so bad for us.


Hot dogs – There’s a long-running joke associated with hot dogs, which basically goes something along the lines of us not having any idea of what the “sausages” actually contain. Hot dog sausages are heavily processed “pork” sausages made from what are known as ‘meat trimmings’. Not to be gross, but much of the meat content comes from ground up offal which has been heavily processed with other chemicals, until it forms a paste. It is then enriched with salt, sugar, MSG, and many other artificial flavourings to try to make the meat taste edible, before finally being shaped into a sausage. Not only that, but the bread bun is also made from refined white flour which is also loaded full of sugar and chemicals.


Soda – Okay, not a food, but soda is so bad for you that we couldn’t leave it off our list. Soda is pumped full of chemicals that do the body no good at all, plus it contains a scarily high amount of sugar. The sugar-free sodas are even worse, as they contain artificial chemical sweeteners that have been linked with a number of chronic illnesses.
